UK Shop & Business Signage Report 2026

What we’ve seen on UK high streets this year, and what it means for your next sign

Published by Surrey Shop Signs  |  2026 edition

About this report

Surrey Shop Signs is one of the UK’s leading shop sign companies. We’re based in Surrey and make signs for shops, offices and businesses across London, the South East and the rest of the UK. Every sign we produce is designed, built and fitted by our own team, whether it’s a single shopfront fascia or signage for a whole business park.

Working on everything from independent shops to brands like Heineken gives us a good view of where signage is heading. This report shares what we’ve been making, what customers have been asking for, and the ideas we think will shape shop and business signage through 2026.

Five things we’ve noticed this year

  1. Shop owners are going bolder, with bright colour and high-contrast lettering that stands out on busy streets.
  2. LED faux neon has become the favourite for bars, cafés and independent shops.
  3. Customers are thinking long term, asking about LED lifespan and weatherproof materials right from the first conversation.
  4. Heritage-style fascias are having a real moment, especially in conservation areas.
  5. Offices and business parks are investing in clear, well-branded signage that welcomes visitors from the car park onwards.

Bolder shopfronts on busy streets

A shop sign works harder than most marketing. In a couple of seconds it tells passers-by who you are, what you sell and why they should step inside. It’s why outdoor signage helps shops attract more footfall, and why so many of our customers now treat their sign as their best-value piece of advertising.

This year more of our customers have chosen strong colours and confident lettering. On a high street full of shopfronts, a bold fascia gives a business its own identity and makes it easy to find again.

The two places this shows most:

  • The fascia itself. The sign above the door sets the tone for the whole shop. Our shop front fascias and sign boards come in a wide range of finishes to suit any brand.
  • Dimensional lettering. Built-up letters have real depth and look fantastic both in person and in photos. Our 3D shop sign letters show just how many styles are possible.

The rise of LED faux neon

Neon has always had a special kind of charm, and LED faux neon brings that warm glow to far more businesses. It’s energy efficient, low maintenance and can be shaped into almost any logo or lettering. For bars, cafés and independent shops, it’s become the go-to choice for a shopfront people love to photograph and share.

Lighting in general is one of the best upgrades a business can make. It keeps a sign working well into the evening and gives the whole frontage a lift. The two styles we fit most often:

You’ll find every style we offer in our illuminated shop letters and logos range, and our article on the best lighting for outdoor signage will help you choose.

Customers are thinking long term

More of our customers now start by asking how long their sign will last, how the LEDs perform over time and how different materials handle British weather. We love these conversations, because a well-chosen sign will look great for many years.

Here’s how we usually match materials to the job:

MaterialWhere it shinesWhy customers choose it
Aluminium compositeShop fascias and sign boardsRigid, weatherproof and excellent value. The backbone of the British shopfront.
AcrylicModern fascias and illuminated signsA crisp, contemporary finish that looks superb when lit.
Stainless steel and metal finishesSigns built to last for yearsA premium look with outstanding durability.
PolystyreneOversized letters and event piecesBig visual impact while staying light and easy to move.
Vinyl graphicsWindows, displays and promotionsQuick to produce, great value and easy to refresh.

We’ve written more about outdoor signage materials built for British weather, and our guide to custom metal signs looks at stainless steel and other metal finishes in detail. For something really eye-catching, take a look at the giant polystyrene letters we made, which prove that big can also be light and easy to handle.

Heritage-style signage in conservation areas

Lots of the high streets we work on sit in conservation areas, and they’re some of the most characterful places in the country. We’ve seen growing demand for traditional hand-painted and engraved-style fascias that suit these streets beautifully while still giving a business a distinctive look.

A quick guide to planning permission for shop signs

Many standard shop signs fall under what’s called “deemed consent”, which means they can go up without a separate planning application as long as they sit within the size and position guidelines set by the council. A few things can bring in extra requirements:

  • Illumination. Lit signs are looked at a little more closely.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas. These may have their own guidance on colour, materials and lettering style.

Every council has its own approach, so it’s always worth a quick check with your local authority. We take care of this thinking at the design stage, so your sign is designed with the right guidance in mind from the start.

Office and business park signage

For offices and business parks, great signage is all about making people feel welcome. Visitors, couriers and new starters can find the right entrance straight away, and outdoor office signage makes a strong first impression before anyone has even reached reception.

Our corporate signage is designed to reflect a company’s brand with a smart, consistent look across every sign. It works hand in hand with our external building signage, from entrance signs through to full building identification, and our business signs give any premises a clear, professional presence.

If you’re weighing up options, our guide to outdoor office signage materials and styles is a good place to start.

From our workshop

Two recent projects show the kind of creative engineering that goes into our signs.

Heineken: a festival bar sign made to travel

Heineken asked us for a logo sign to sit on top of a shipping container converted into a festival bar. It needed to look great from every angle, including from behind, and travel from event to event on the back of a lorry.

We built the sign around an aluminium frame, with the support for every letter and section of the logo built into the fixing system, so it bolts straight onto the container. It has been to several festivals since and still looks as good as the day it was fitted. You can see more in our festival signage case study.

Lucky Bee Gin: an illuminated logo with clever engineering

Lucky Bee Gin wanted an illuminated bee logo for their trade show stand. The bee’s slender antennae and legs were a lovely part of the design, so we made them part of the structure too. They form the bracket system that holds the logo to the stand, keeping the body standing proud of the surface, with white LEDs behind for a soft glow.

Before you ask for a quote

A few simple questions will help you get the most from your new sign:

  1. When does your street get the most passing trade?
  2. Would you like your sign to shine in the evenings too?
  3. Is your building listed or in a conservation area?
  4. What budget have you set aside, including running costs for illuminated signs?
  5. Is the sign for one business, or for several businesses sharing a building?

A great sign builds your brand, helps you stand out and tells customers you’re proud of your business. For a lighter look at why consistent branding matters, have a read of our 5 office signage lessons from England’s World Cup team.

Questions we’re asked most

Can LED faux neon be used outdoors?

Yes. Made with outdoor-rated LED neon and properly sealed, it works beautifully on shopfronts and gives that classic neon look with low running costs.

Can I have an illuminated sign in a conservation area?

Often, yes. Illuminated signs in conservation areas usually need consent from the council, and we design with the local guidance in mind so your sign looks right for the street.

Which materials are best for UK weather?

Aluminium composite and properly finished acrylic both perform brilliantly in the British climate. For busy or exposed spots, stainless steel and other metal finishes offer outstanding durability.

How long does a new shop sign take?

It depends on the design. Printed and vinyl signs can be turned around quickly, while illuminated and 3D signs take a little longer as there’s more craftsmanship involved. Because Surrey Shop Signs makes everything in-house, we can give you a clear timeline as soon as your design is approved.

Do you design the sign as well as make and fit it?

Yes. Our team handles everything, from the first design visual through manufacture to installation.
