Timber Wooden Shop Sign Signboard

Timber Shop Signboards and Wooden Fascia Signs

Wooden shop signs and timber fascia signboards are becoming a popular ‘must-have’ form of signage for shops, bars and restaurants in recent years as they look trendy, organic and great!

Produced in a range of timber such as Larch, Cedar and Douglas Fir, the wooden planks are cut to size inside a factory to ensure an even distribution of timber slats. The wooden sign is usually mounted within a metal boarder which can be painted in your desired colour. The metal frame acts as a picture frame boarder which not only looks nice, but ensures all the fixings are discreetly hidden from the face of the fascia signboard.

The timber can then be treated in a range of coloured varnish or paint to achieve the desired colour. The wood stain or varnish will transform the timber from its natural grain colour into a darker or richer coloured finish – whichever is preferred.

Choosing the wood finish and colour

Wood Stain is a type of paint used to change the colour of the wooden planks which make up the fascia signboard. Typically, a lighter coloured timber is used to produce the wooden signboard which is then treated with wood stain in order to achieve the desired colour or finish.

Some of the more popular wood stain finishes used for shop signs include:

  • Natural Pine
  • Light Oak
  • Dark Oak
  • Walnut,
  • Red Cedar
  • Ebony Black
  • White Pearl

The wooden fascia signs can also be painted in solid paint colours as well to achieve your desired colour specification.

Coloured or stained finishes do not typically deeply penetrate the pores of the wood and so the sign may require maintenance over time whereby additional coats of paint or stain are needed to maintain the colour of the signboard.

Illuminating your wooden shop sign

Back-lit LED illuminated letters are most commonly used for illuminated signs as they are a gentle yet effective way of displaying your shop sign name.

The sign letters are fabricated to create a 3d metal letter that have a series of L.E.D lights integrated within the cavity of the letters which illuminates the letters from behind. This method of production projects light onto the timber background creating a halo glow.

Different coloured L.E.D lights can be used to illuminate the letters however cold white LEDs are most commonly used.

In poorly-lit areas this method of lighting will mean that the face of the letters will be dark and not illuminated as the light will be positioned from behind which creates a silhouette-style glow of the logo or letters, however this still should produce enough light to make the lettering readable.

Other methods of illuminating your timber shop sign include installing a long external LED strip light above the sign which projects light down onto the entire signboard.

Alternatively, half a dozen or so spot lights can be positioned on the signboard to illuminate sections of the sign.
