Rusty Shop Sign Letters

Opening a quirky shop, restaurant or bar in the centre of town?

It seems like the trend at the moment is to display your business name or company branding in industrial-looking rusty steel shop sign lettering.

And to be fair, they do look good!

The shop sign lettering can be mounted to unpainted or painted brickwork, internal or external walls and wooden fascias, to create a range of different styles and rusty effects.

There’s a few ways in which this style of shop lettering is achieved and more often than not, a mild steel is used to create the actual sign letters which are treated with various chemicals to speed up the corrosion / rusted effect. Alternatively, if you have time on your hands then the mild steel letters can be left out in the garden exposed to the elements and they’ll begin to rust and corrode in no time.

A few of the styles we’ve produced recently for various shop signs, restaurant signs and bar signs have been either the flat cut rusted metal letters and also the 3D rusted metal letters as per the below:

flat rusty shop metal lettersFlat Cut Rusty Metal Shop Sign Letters are typically produced in a mild steel which is 2mm, 3mm, 5mm or 10mm thick. The shape of the letters are laser cut out from a flat sheet of metal and then pre-fitted with raised wall fixings so that the letters can be attached to the wall securely. There are a few different methods in which the letters can be mounted to the wall but usually they’re supplied with a threaded rod fixing which is positioned behind the letters so you have the option of mounting the letters flush to the wall or standing proud off the wall by a couple of centimeters.

3d rusty shop metal letters3D Rusty Metal Shop Sign Letters are also produced in a mild steel however these letters are designed to look really chunky and stand off the wall for that bold look. The shape of the font is laser cut from a sheet of metal before each section is welded together to create a boxed shape three-dimensional letter. In a similar way to the flat rusted steel letters, they’re pre-fitted with raised wall fixings so that the letters are be attached to the wall securely and you have the option of them being fitted flush to the wall or slightly raised off the wall. 3D letters can also be produced as illuminated shop sign letters.

Over time both of the above shop sign rusty letter options will begin to age more and the lettering will display various shades of colour; from a bright orange rust colour during the dry summer months to a dark orange-brown during the more wet winter months.

If you’re planning on using this type of signage indoors then it’s best to leave the letters outside to rust to the level of rust / colour which you desire before installing them on your inside wall so that it speeds the process up.

If you’d prefer a more traditional type of shop signage or shop sign writing then it’s well worth reading our blog on Types of Restaurant Signs where you’ll find some nice ideas on the different types of signs and letters used for bars and restaurants.
